TAKORADI, GHANA — Non-governmental organizations often face the challenge of meeting donor expectations—a gap that can lead to missed funding opportunities and stalled community projects. To bridge this gap, the Social Entrepreneurship Hub (SE-Hub) organized an intensive capacity-building workshop for Genda in Focus and EXA Ventures under the Anesvad Foundation’s Social Enterprise Project.

Held in a blended format across two sessions on March 21 and April 7, 2025, the training gathered participants both in person and virtually. The workshop aimed to strengthen proposal development capacities and ensure that project concepts align with donor priorities, funding criteria, and presentation standards.

Through practical exercises, participants learned to refine their objectives, mission, and vision statements using the SMART framework. The sessions also emphasized the importance of developing effective operational plans—combining sound preparation, evaluation, and implementation—to transform strong ideas into actionable, fundable initiatives.

Building on these foundations, SE-Hub facilitators led participants through the principles of business profiling and strategic positioning, helping organizations define their identity, market focus, and sustainability strategies. A hands-on budgeting exercise revealed common financial errors made in proposals, while an interactive discussion explored why many applications are rejected—highlighting issues such as inadequate transparency, weak alignment with donor values, and limited proof of impact.

The workshop, facilitated by Rev. Yaw Andoh Mensah, SE-Hub’s Head of Projects, further underscored key donor expectations related to accountability, environmental responsibility, sustainability planning, and robust monitoring and evaluation systems. Participants discussed how credibility and competence serve as decisive factors in earning donor trust and securing long-term partnerships.

SE-Hub’s initiative represents a timely and strategic response to the funding challenges NGOs continue to face. By focusing on practicality, clarity, and measurable outcomes, the Hub continues to empower social enterprises and nonprofit leaders with the tools and insight required to design winning proposals—ensuring that impactful projects receive the support they need to create lasting change across Ghana.
