GTL Startup Incubator Programme
GTL startup incubation is a 10-week program for startups emerging from the base program, nurtured and groomed to become established businesses. The Social Entrepreneurship Hub’s role as a partner hub is to assist selected startups in this regard. Among the individuals who participated in the Base program, three (3) businesses were incubated at the hub.
Startups in Incubation
Name of startup | Members | Description |
|---|---|---|
Edwmafie | Eliis Nana Justice Winifred Kwofie | Startup deals connecting artisans, tertiary students, and unemployed graduates to part-time jobs in Takoradi |
SAG | Bless Dodor Isaac Ansah Shafawu Sulemana | Startup is into providing packaging solutions for manufacturing and packaging companies |
Watts | Anastacia mills Isaac deku Emmanuel Adammah | A startup connects electronic waste recyclers to companies that produce it. |
The incubation program started with an introductory week during which startups were oriented to the program structure, migrated to a dedicated incubation portal, and familiarised with the startup ecosystem and team dynamics. Founders completed co-founder agreements and engaged in an entrepreneurial hustle selling products in Takoradi, culminating in presentations on their experiences. Participating startups included Edwumafie, SAG, and Watts, each addressing different market needs ranging from job connections to packaging and electronic waste recycling.
The following weeks deepened focus on design thinking and idea validation, beginning with empathy exercises where startups engaged directly with stakeholders to refine problem statements and service designs. They developed persona profiles, customer journey maps, and service blueprints. This was followed by business model development using the canvas framework, prototype creation emphasising web portals and mobile applications, and pitch deck preparation supported by mentorship from experts. Product development progressed with technical guidance, resulting in prototypes ready for market.
The program concluded with a pitch event at the Social Entrepreneurship Hub, where only one startup, Edwumafie, presented successfully and advanced to the next stage in Accra. Participant feedback was positive, highlighting the program’s role in nurturing ideas and providing impactful coaching and networking. Challenges included session lateness, delays in stipend and funding disbursements, and fluctuating commitment levels. Key recommendations emphasised timely funding and improved startup engagement to enhance future program success, thereby equipping startups with tools for scaling and market linkage.
