Trash to Treasure

Empowering Young Innovators to Reimagine Waste, Spark Creativity, and Embrace Entrepreneurship through Circular Economy Education

Project Overview

The Trash to Treasure (Trash2Treasure) Competition

It is an innovative initiative aimed at orienting basic, junior, and senior high school students about the circular economy. They are challenged to work in teams, transforming the waste found on their campuses into valuable products/ art pieces which can be sold. This approach, we believe, will help shape the young child’s view of what is waste and how to handle it.

The students are also introduced to effectual entrepreneurship, which allows them to appreciate the need to use the means to co-create a future or product that they can offer to customers.

Program Highlights

  • Students participate in competitions where they repurpose waste materials found on campus into artwork and design projects, showcasing resourcefulness and environmental awareness.
  • The inaugural “Trash to Treasure Competition” in saw teams from Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High School, Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School, St. John’s School, Fijai Senior High School, and St. Mary’s Boys’ Senior High School presenting creative works, with Archbishop Porter Girls emerging as winners.

The project is spearheaded by Social Entrepreneurship Hub Ghana via Nnoboa Space, in collaboration with Society for Effectual Action (USA), and Scio Network (Germany) forming the African Effectual Entrepreneurship Initiative. In partnership with other institutions and organisations we implement the project in other parts of the country – Trash to Treasure for Junior high school in Kumasi, Ghana in partnership with Recycle Up Ghana.

Impact Summary

The competition empowered school students to view waste as a resource, encouraging creative thinking and early-stage entrepreneurship while promoting environmental consciousness in schools. It fostered teamwork, innovation, and practical business learning in a fun and impactful way.
