Widu Project

Promoting Employment and Financial Inclusion by Leveraging Diaspora Capital to Empower Ghana’s Informal Sector Entrepreneurs

Project Overview

Widu Project

In 2023, the Social Entrepreneurship Hub, with support from GIZ, implemented the WIDU Project in Ghana to drive employment and economic development within the informal sector. The initiative focused on mobilizing diaspora remittances as a catalyst for local entrepreneurship and business growth. By targeting informal sector workers and small-scale entrepreneurs, the project successfully engaged over 900 businesses and individuals. Through strategic activities such as financial literacy training, funding support, and business coaching, the project enhanced financial inclusion and empowered entrepreneurs to grow their ventures. The use of diaspora capital played a pivotal role in fueling business development, supporting job creation, and improving the overall resilience of Ghana’s informal economy.

Impact Summary

Over 900 entrepreneurs in Ghana’s informal sector gained access to funding and business support through diaspora-linked investments. The project boosted job creation, financial inclusion, and the sustainability of small businesses.
